Hashtags, we've all heard of them right? Twitter uses the humble # symbol to link tweets into a separate timeline. One of the most popular and well used hashtags is #ff or Follow Friday. Every Friday these can be seen all over your feed, and may be the reason why Friday is the busiest time on Twitter.

So why am I blogging about #ff? Well here's the deal. Used well, Follow Friday really helps me find new and interesting Twitter accounts and also helps me share my useful and interesting accounts too. Used in a lazy fashion, it simply annoys me and fills my timeline with tweets I simply don't read, skim over and ignore.

For a while now myself and a fellow #ff warrior @Crantona have been using Friday to campaign against these 'lists' of Twitter names and we call it the #ffmission. Here in simple terms is the message we are trying to get across:

  • #ff @nobody He is without doubt the funniest guy on Twitter, and I love his blogs and social media links too! LOL @ his tweets
Versus
  • #ff @nobody @himself @himoverthere @whathisface @mymateSteve @randomlypicked @MrsDull @Whocares @Ivestoppedreading

So which one gives you information about a Twitter account and also thanks the tweeter for being ace?

Which one looks like a spam message?

If you are included in an #ff would you rather it be the first one? Have some great stuff said about you and gain some followers? Well I know I would.

Myself and Ryan (@Crantona) have come up against some grief for our 'Twitter Policing' but we are sticking to our guns. Spamming up our timeline has forced us to unfollow people, but writing an #ff like the first example has helped us follow some new and interesting tweeters.

If you give someone you follow a great #ff they will love it and your followers will find it useful AND you may get one back.

At the end of the day, Twitter is open to everyone's interpretation - and that is what makes it great.

I just wanted to share a theory with you. By all means let me know what you think. If you want to use #ffhelper to spam my feed then who am I to stop you? I'll just unfollow instead. ;)
